Denitrification in a sawdust and sewage sludge barrier system in northern Sweden

At the Malmberget iron ore mine in northern Sweden, nitrogen compounds from undetonated explosives enter into the mine water and process water at the site. Process water is eventually discharged to the Lina?lv River and, without treatment, can lead to eutrophication and toxicity issues (e.g., from ammonia generation) in the recipient. This paper reports on the results from 2011 and 2012 and on plans to extend the operational period into the autumn months when average daily temperatures decrease below 0 C. Authors: Roger B. Herbert, Harry Winbj?rk. Published by InfoMine Inc. 2013.
