Zinc and Lead Metallurgy

The International Symposium on Zinc and Lead Metallurgy was co-organized by the Hydrometallurgy and Non-ferrous Pyrometallurgy Sections of the Metallurgical Society of CIM. This symposium builds on the foundations established by previous meetings devoted to the study of lead and zinc, especially Zinc and Lead Processing, held ten years ago in Calgary, Canada. Other related meetings have included Lead and Zinc 2005 (Kyoto, Japan), Lead-Zinc 2000 (Pittsburgh, U.S.A.), Lead and Zinc 1995 (Sendai, Japan), World Zinc 1993 (Hobart, Australia) and Lead-Zinc 1990 (Anaheim, U.S.A.). Like the previous meetings, this Symposium brings together the world's processing, engineering and research communities to discuss the latest developments in the extractive metallurgy and processing of zinc and lead.

In addition to the technical presentations represented by the papers in this volume, the Symposium includes a short course and industrial tours. The short course provides an overview of the principles, process fundamentals and industrial practices related to the extractive metallurgy and the refining of lead and zinc. This symposium proceedings volume was a result of the formulation of the program by the Organizing Committee and the preparation of manuscripts by the authors. Once the manuscripts were received, the tasks of refereeing, editing and indexing the various submissions were assumed by the editors, who are indebted to the authors for their efforts in preparing the papers and their understanding of the need for a consistently-formatted volume.

The Zinc and Lead Metallurgy volume contains thirty papers which cover a broad range of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical aspects of the commercial production of lead and zinc. Consideration is given to smelting, fuming, leaching, purification, solvent extraction and electrowinning operations and studies, as well as historical overviews, market trends and recycling and environmental aspects.
